Studies on the drought resistance of major food crops. II. Effect of water stress on the activity of nitrate reductase and protease, and the accumulation of free proline in barley and wheat at seedling stage

Studies on the drought resistance of major food crops. II. Effect of water stress on the activity of nitrate reductase and protease, and the accumulation of free proline in barley and wheat at seedling stage

Korean Journal of Crop Science 27(1): 60-65

In 16 of wheat, rye and barley, water stress caused by withholding water for 8 days at 10 days after emergence or by treating excised 1st leaves with polyethylene glycol (-20 bar) for 48 h decreased nitrate reductase activity by an av. of 42%, protease activity by 73% and proline content 10 fold.
