The importance of exposure environment and movement in boar-induced precocious puberty in the gilt

60 Large White X Landrace prepubertal gilts from 12 litters were randomly allocated within litters, at 145 days of age, to 5 treatment groups in 2 replicates, treatments beginning at 165 days of age: (1) gilts were moved to a boar pen and were exposed to a boar, (3) gilts were moved to a new pen (previously unused) and exposed to a boar, (3) gilts were moved to a new pen but not exposed to a boar, (4) gilts were moved to a recently vacated boar pen, or (5) gilts were not moved or exposed to a boar (controls). Treatments were given daily for 30 min from 165 to 240 days of age or until oestrus occurred. Average age at puberty was lower (P less than 0.001) for gilts given treatments 1 and 2 (206.0+or-7.6 and 213.5+or-7.0 days resp.) than for gilts given treatments 3, 4 and 5 (239.8+or-2.1, 233.9+or-4.9 and 234.4+or-5.4 days resp.).
