Of 2500 varieties from 19 countries studied in this area of European Russia during 1959-72, 380 were selected as promising for winter hardiness (97 varieties), earliness (60), short straw (69), resistance to Erysiphe graminis (36) and Puccinia recondita (30), large grain (38), high protein content (28) and high yield (22).
