Four Trifolium pratense cultivars grown in nitrogen-free nutrient solution were compared in the laboratory: double-cut diploids Ottawa Red and Florex, a single-cut diploid local variety and double-cut tetraploid Bytown. Florex gave significantly higher values for root development score, top development score, nodule development score, top dry weight and chlorophyll content than did Bytown. No differences were found between the 3 double-cut cultivars in nitrogen-fixing ability.
