A hypothesis for decreasing parasitization of larch casebearer (Lepidoptera: Coleophoridae) on larch foliage by Agathis pumila

A hypothesis for decreasing parasitization of larch casebearer (Lepidoptera: Coleophoridae) on larch foliage by Agathis pumila

Canadian Entomologist 117(12): 1573-1574

Examination of pupal cases of Coleophora laricella from the undergrowth in a plot of larch in Oregon in June 1984 showed parasitization rates by the braconid Agathis pumila of 96.3%, significantly higher than found on the foliage the week before (32.6%). This is explained by the different behaviours of parasitized and unparasitized larvae of C. laricella. A higher percentage of the former than the latter may descend from the larch foliage to the understorey vegetation.
