An automated manometric method for quantitative determination of calcite and dolomite

, : An automated manometric method for quantitative determination of calcite and dolomite. Soil Science Society of America Journal 48(6): 1236-1239

A rapid automated method is described for differentiation and quantitative determination of calcite and dolomite in earth materials. The method is based on differential pseudo-1st-order kinetic rates of dissolution of the 2 carbonate species when reacted with excess of 5 M-HCl. The method employs manometric measurement of acid-liberated CO2 with a differential pressure transducer coupled to a strip chart recorded. Tested on calcite and dolomite singly and together in geologic materials, the method is highly discriminatory, highly sensitive and extremely rapid. Theoretical treatments of pseudo-1st-order kinetic reactions and of manometric measurements associated with the method are reviewed.
