Continuing structural change in GFR farming over the past 20 years has been accompanied by increasing specialization in cereals production with questionable ecological results and a growing financial problem for the EC budget. After an examination of the ecological problems raised by continuous cropping with chemical fertilizers and plant protection, the possibilities of alternative extensive leaf crops (winter rape, legumes, silo-maize) are explored under conditions in Lower Saxony.
