Behaviour of fungicides in recirculating nutrient film hydroponic systems

Populations of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. dianthi declined within 24 h from 104/ml to < 1/ml when introduced into a recirculating nutrient film hydroponic system in the presence or absence of carnation plants. The conidia were killed by addition of 5 mg/l available chlorine to the nutrient reservoir; daily applications were necessary to maintain kill of subsequent additions of Fusarium conidia, but this treatment resulted in phytotoxic symptoms.
