Behaviour of genotypes of maize in relation to the attack of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, 1797) and Heliothis zea (Bod, 1850)

In 1982-83, 42 maize genotypes were evaluated in Jaboticabal, Sao Paulo, Brazil, for susceptibility to damage by Spodoptera frugiperda and infestation and damage by Heliothis zea. Damage by S. frugiperda was assessed visually 20, 35 and 50 days after germination. The numbers of eggs of H. zea were counted on the ears in the middle portion of the plants when about 50% of the ears had produced stigmas; damage by H. zea was assessed post-harvest.
