Biological control of the rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes rhinoceros) in the South Pacific by baculovirus

A baculovirus, originally discovered in Malaysia, attacks both larvae and adults of the scarabaeid Oryctes rhinoceros, a serious pest of the coconut palm in the South Pacific. Field trials were carried out in Fiji beginning in 1970 in an attempt to release the virus for the biological control of the pest. Establishment was successful at many sites and was followed by a reduction in beetle population.
