Bundle sheath and mesophyll differentiation in the leaves of the C4 grasses Panicum effusum and P. bulbosum

Bundle sheath and mesophyll differentiation in the leaves of the C4 grasses Panicum effusum and P. bulbosum

American Journal of Botany 72(6): 812

Observations of cell size, vacuole size, organelle number and size, wall thickness and contact with intercellular space were made of successive developmental stages of P. effusum and P. bulbosum. Most features exhibited little change during early stages of vein ontogeny with divergence between bundle sheath and mesophyll during the final stages of cell and leaf elongation and maturation in both spp. Growth of the intercellular space occurred earlier in P. bulbosum.
