CIAT enters the biotechnology era

CIAT enters the biotechnology era

CIAT International 4(1): 3-5

Work at the Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical, Colombia, is described. Tissue culture is used with Manihot esculenta to obtain disease-free material for germplasm exchange, distribution and conservation, for propagation, and to exploit somaclonal variation. Anther culture of Oryza sativa produces homozygous plants much more quickly than conventional methods, so allowing varieties to be released rapidly, and it also has applications in breeding for tolerance to toxic substances.
