Calcitonin-like immunoreactivity in human milk, longitudinal alterations and divalent cations

Concn. of immunoreactive calcitonin (iCT) was 10-40x the serum concn. in milk samples collected from 29 mothers within 1 wk and from 46 mothers 3 months post partum; iCT was resp. (mean +or- s.d.) 2.46 +or- 0.99 and 0.58 +or- 0.08 ng/ml. Eight of the 29 mothers gave milk on 2 occasions, 1-2 and 4-6 days after delivery, with a significant decline of about 20% in iCT during this period. One mother gave milk for 2 months.
