Calcium homeostasis in the chick embryo

The plasma concentrations of calcitonin, ionized Ca, inorganic P and hydroxylated metabolites of vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D3, 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3, 25,26-dihydroxyvitamin D3 and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D) have been measured in chick embyros daily from day 16 of incubation until hatching (day 20/21) and in 1-, 2- and 7-day-old chicks. A significant positive correlation between calcitonin (N = 30, r = 0.73, P < 0.001) and significant negative correlation between calcitonin and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (N = 29, r = -0.59, P < 0.001) and between ionized Ca and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (N = 29, r = -0.46, P = < 0.05) have been observed in chick embryos. 25-Hydroxyvitamin D3 and 25,26-dihydroxyvitamin D3 showed minor changes while 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 did not change throughout the period of study. Hypercalcitoninemia in the later stage of embryonic life may be a response to preserve Ca homeostasis by decreasing fetal bone resorption and a decrease in plasma 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D during this period could be normal homeostatic response to hypercalcemia. No evidence was shown that calcitonin or hypophosphatemia stimulate 25-(OH)D-1-hydroxylase activity in chick embryo.
