Calcium regulation in blowflies: absence of a role for midgut

Calcium regulation in blowflies: absence of a role for midgut

American Journal of Physiology 249(2 Pt 2): R209-R213

Adult blowflies (Calliphora vicina) survived many days without increased mortality if given 12.5 mM CaCl2 solution in place of water. Initially the calcium content of those flies rapidly increased to more than double the original content but then remained stable for many days afterward. Ca absorption continued at a similar rate throughout this time. Midguts isolated from flies given 12.5 mM CaCl2 solution or distilled water had the same capacity to absorb Ca.
