Calcium transport in membrane vesicles of Streptococcus cremoris

Calcium transport in membrane vesicles of Streptococcus cremoris

Antonie van Leeuwenhoek 51(4): 448

In order to study the role of the proton motive force in Ca extrusion in Streptococcus cremoris, the light-driven proton pump bacteriorhodopsin was incorporated into the bacterial cell membrane. Membrane vesicles of S. cremoris were fused with bacteriorhodopsin proteoliposomes at pH <less or =>5.5. The proton motive force generated by bacteriorhodopsin upon illumination promoted Ca uptake in the fused membranes. The ionophore valinomycin stimulated Ca uptake and increased the pH change.
