Calf management in conventional and unheated sheds

Calf management in conventional and unheated sheds

Schweizer Braunvieh (7): 51-55

Within 12 h of birth, 14 purebred and crossbred Swiss Brown calves were placed in a specially built, conventionally heated shed with mechanical ventilation and a thermostat (mean temp. 17.0 degrees C), and another group was housed in a similar but unheated shed (mean temp. 4.3 degrees ) without mechanical ventilation. It was concluded that there was no difference between the 2 housing systems from the point of health, feed conversion for growth, and economics.
