California serogroup virus infection in a horse with encephalitis

A yearling stallion with acute encephalitis was positive for antibody to the snowshoe hare serotype of the California serogroup in haemaglutination-inhibition, complement fixation and neutralization tests. No antibodies were detected to equine encephalomyelitis, Powasan, St. Louis encephalitis or Cache Valley viruses. The horse recovered uneventfully within one week.
