Calorimetry of nitrogenase-mediated reductions in detached soybean nodules

The heat generated by isolated soyabean nodules under various atmospheres was measured using a modified calorimeter and was related to nitrogenase activity determined by simultaneous gas exchange analysis. The specific rates of heat evolution were: 171+or-6 kcal/mol H2 evolved in an Ar-O2 atmosphere for proton reductions; 784+or-26 kcal/mol H2 evolved and N2 fixed for N fixation; and 250+or-12 kcal/acetylene formed for acetylene reduction.
