A review and discussion, with mention of Pyrus ussuriensis, P. bretschneideri, P. pyrifolia and P. pashia, their introduction into France, and their improvement in Japan. Cultural characteristics are outlined with reference to rootstocks (usually seedling P. pyrifolia), susceptibility to black spot (Alternaria kikuchiana) and the disorders hard-end and water core, and training requirements.
