Can quantitative anatomy be useful for probability-based wood identification

Quantitative anatomical parameters of the cellular elements of the secondary xylem of 40 Brazilian hardwood species were determined using stereological techniques. A multivariate statistical analysis (discriminant analysis) was applied to the results, based on 21 selected size distribution variables. Using this statistical method, all but 11 out of 120 trees could be identified correctly as one of the 40 species, at a 90% probability level.
