In work with 24 varieties in this area of the Kazakh SSR during 1979-80, only 20 varieties set pods after selfing; high self fertility was shown by Mestnaya iz Kitaya (K32861), with 51.3% set, Kokshe (42.3%) and several local varieties from the Semirech'e area of SE Kazakhstan, viz. K38535, K38536 and K38519 (29.6-42.1%). Reciprocal crosses were carried out between plants with high self fertility (>60%), moderate self fertility (40-60%), low self fertility (20-40%) and self sterility.
