Comparative pathogenicity of Nosema acridophagus Henry and Nosema cuneatum Henry (Microsporida: Nosematidae) for Melanoplus sanguinipes (Fab.) (Orthoptera: Acrididae)

Nosema acridophagus was shown to be more virulent than N. cuneatum to 3rd-instar nymphs of Melanoplus sanguinipes after peroral inoculation with 1.0 x 106, 105, 104 or 10superscript 3 spores/individual. The lethal time was dose dependent and significantly shorter, and the LD50 significantly lower, in grasshoppers inoculated with N. acridophagus than in those inoculated with N. cuneatum.
