Specific bees capable of pollinating lucerne were studied at the Centro de Investigaciones Agrarias at Valladolid, Spain. Out of 30 spp., Megachile rotundata was considered the most promising. Information is given on the management of M. rotundata with a view to encouraging its growth and activity as a pollinator, and also on its parasites. Controlled pollination has so far hardly been used by Spanish farmers but in one case it increased seed yield of lucerne by almost 100%.
