Cultivar response of rice seedlings in compact or loose soil to 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid

Seedlings of rice IR56 (irrigated cv.) and Azucena (rainfed cv.) were planted in dried clay loam soil brought to 20% m.c. by addition of distilled water or an aqueous solution of the Na salt of 2,4-D. The soil was compressed into pots to bulk densities of 1.5 g/cmsuperscript 3 (compact) or 1.1 g (loose). The opt. concn. of 2,4-D at 7 days of seedling growth was 10-6 M for both cv., with 53.6 and 47.7% promotion of root elongation in IR56 and Azucena, resp.
