The effect of broadcasting or placement of 60 kg N + 40 kg P2O5 + 50 kg K2O/ha in late autumn or pre-sowing on yields, yield components and N content of spring wheat was investigated in 1977-9 on podzolized chernozem soil S. of Novosibirsk. Grain yields of spring wheat cv. Novosibirskaya 67 increased in the order: autumn broadcasting < autumn placement < pre-sowing broadcasting < pre-sowing placement. The latter gave 433 ears/msuperscript 2, 21.5 grains/ear and a 1000-grain weight of 35.7 g, compared with 421, 19.3 and 35.1 g, resp., for pre-sowing broadcasting and 406, 15.6 and 34.4 g for the control without NPK. Pre-sowing fertilizer placement gave the highest accumulation of N in plant biomass at tillering, booting, flowering and grain maturity, with total amounts of 1.12, 2.04, 2.77 and 3.15 g N/plot (100-120 msuperscript 2), resp., compared with 0.68, 1.11, 1.89 and 2.19 g, resp., for the control.
