Differences in susceptible age in maize varieties differing in resistance to head smut

In a 3-year study of 3 varieties differing in resistance to Sphacelotheca reiliana, susceptibility was generally greater in the younger organs and tissues. Hypocotyls and coleoptiles were the organs primarily affected and they were at their most susceptible at preemergence. The resistant variety had a shorter period of susceptibility than the susceptible variety.
