Studies of 4 x 4 x 2 m caged plots of yellow-bulbed Dorata di Parma and red-bulbed Rossa di Toscana showed that the rates of cross pollination and seed production per plant were greater when bees (Apis mellifera) were used (32% cross pollination when the varieties were close together and 6.7 g seed/plant) than when blowflies (Calliphora spp.) were used (24% cross pollination and 3.7 g seed/plant).
