Differential activity of genes in triticale as affected by the lysine-rich histone H1

The percentage of disturbances at meiosis and the subfractional composition of H1 were analysed in 7 octoploid and 9 hexaploid triticales of different origin. The polymorphism and intervarietal differences in H1 to some extent reflected differences in morphology between the forms. Moreover, the fewer the H1 subfractions present, the greater was the variation in percentage of disturbances at meiosis, suggesting that, in triticales with fewer H1 subfractions, more genes are in an active state.
