Corpora lutea were obtained from 70- to 95-day pregnant sows, and were incubated with combinations of LH, prolactin, dibutyryl cAMP, high or low density lipoproteins and 25-OH cholesterol. A model was developed to explain the roles of LH and prolactin in the maintenance of the corpus luteum of pregnancy. LH appeared to be involved in the importation of extra-cellular cholesterol by inducing or maintaining lipoprotein receptors before cleaving cholesterol to pregnenolone.
