Differential response of cucurbit cultivars to mercury pretreatment on germination and seedling growth

Pretreatment of seeds with high concentration of Hg (50 mg/l) caused inhibition of germination and seedling growth in 3 spp. of cucurbits: Cucumis utilissimus, G. melo and Luffa aegyptiaca. A lower concentration (10 mg/l) showed promotive effect in some cultivars. Growth of hypocotyl was more affected by Hg than that of the radicle. Evaluation of germination and seedling growth may be helpful in assessing the relative resistance or susceptibility of cucurbit cultivars to Hg and choice of resistant cultivars for cultivation would be meaningful in minimizing the pollution hazards.
