Differential scanning calorimetric and infra-red spectroscopic studies of interactions between lignocellulosic materials, hydrogen peroxide, and furfuryl alcohol

White fir wood flour, microcrystalline cellulose, milled-wood lignin, and ammonium lignosulphonate were mixed with furfuryl alcohol and maleic acid in various proportions in the presence or absence of hydrogen peroxide. Interactions of the above materials were analysed using differential scanning calorimetry and infra-red spectroscopy. Hydrogen peroxide reacted exothermally with wood flour, cellulose, lignins, and furfuryl alcohol and modified their chemical functionality.
