Differential use of pin and black cherry by the eastern tent caterpillar Malacosoma americanum Fab. (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae)

Differential use of pin and black cherry by the eastern tent caterpillar Malacosoma americanum Fab. (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae)

American Midland Naturalist, 1131: 45-55

Although pin cherry (Prunus pensylvanica) and black cherry (P. serotina) commonly occur in single and mixed-species stands in north-eastern USA, Malacosoma americanum is only rarely found on the former species. In several infested mixed-species stands examined in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Hampshire in 1976-81, 3-96% of black-cherry trees had 1 or more egg-masses of the lasiocampid on them, whereas only 0-7% of pin-cherry trees in the same stands had egg-masses on them.
