Differentiation between human and bovine strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from mastitic milk

Examination of 83 Staphylococcus aureus strains, isolated from 368 mastitic milk samples, showed that all strains coagulated rabbit plasma and contained thermonucleases, 56 strains coagulated bovine plasma, 43 strains were alpha -haemolysin positive and 52 were beta -haemolysin positive. 41% of strains were typable by the human phage set and 19% by the bovine phage 42D. Most (91.1%) of the strains typed by the human phage set belonged to phage group III.
