Differentiation of Bordetella bronchiseptica strains. 4. Pathogenic significance of heat-labile dermonecrotoxins of B. bronchiseptica for development of atrophic rhinitis in baby mice

Intranasal administration of crude toxin of B. bronchiseptica to baby mice at dilutions of 1:4 and 1:8 for 21 days led to changes comparable to those of atrophic rhinitis in 70% and 42.8% respectively of the two groups of animals. Local and systemic effects were recorded, and affected mice showed splenic atrophy and growth depression. Heat treatment of the toxin (56 degrees C for 30 min) prevented these effects.
