Differentiation of four taxa of the Anopheles balabacensis complex using H-banding patterns in the sex chromosomes

Analyses of metaphase chromosomes of 4 taxa of the complex of Anopheles balabacensis (A. dirus sp. A, A. dirus sp. B, A. dirus sp. C and A. takasagoensis) from South-East Asia using the Hoechst 33258 staining technique revealed remarkable differences in the fluorescence banding patterns of the sex chromosomes. These resulted from changes in the amount and distribution of constitutive heterochromatin.
