Differentiation of soil structure on the dry steppe of the Turgay Plateau (Kazakh SSR)

The morphological differentiation of the soil profile in the dry steppe under the influence of shrinkage, vegetation, and the activity of burrowing animals (marmots) is examined. The cracks caused by shrinkage are shown to divide the soils into pedons on which there is a succession of vegetation within a single ecosystem. Marmots help change the physical and physicochemical properties and hydrothermal regime of the soil.
