Diffusive flux of phosphorus to wheat roots in sandy soils

Apparent self diffusion coefficients of P (DaP) and uptake of applied by wheat roots were experimentally determined under varying levels of applied P and Zn in 3 sandy soils of Gujarat [India]. The concentration of P at the root surface (Cr) of wheat plant showed less than 40% reduction during 72 h absorption period under different treatments in all the 3 soils. The Cr values at a given time showed considerable variation in different treatments, the soils treated with 20 ppm P gave comparatively higher Cr values than soils with 10 ppm P treatment. The DaP and uptake of P by wheat significantly increased with increasing levels of P application irrespective of the level of applied Zn in all the soils. Significant relationship between DaP and P uptake was observed in 1 soil. The predicted uptake of applied P by wheat roots under different treatments showed, in general, < 10% variation with the experimentally determined values in all the 3 soils.
