Digestibility of crude nutrients and amino acids from waste bones

Organic matter, crude protein, crude fat, N-free extract substances and basic and sulfuric amino acids obtained from ground bones were checked for digestibility by colostomized fowl and compared to barley. The following amounts of crude nutrients and amino acids were recorded from 1 kg of dry bone matter: 252 g of crude protein, 121 g of crude fat, 44 g of N-free extract substances, 583 g of crude ash, 13.5 g of Lys 3.5 g of His, 32.0 g of Arg, 2.3 g of Met and 1.1 g of Cys. Average apparent digestibility values were 78.7% for organic bone matter, 65.8% for crude protein, 95.0% for crude fat and 92.1% for N-free extract substances. The corresponding digestibility values of barley were 84.0, 82.7, 57.2 and 88.8%. The apparent digestibility of Lys, His and Arg was 79.9, 77.8 and 77.0% for ground bone and 76.6, 80.7 and 81.2% for barley. Met and Cys values were 55.1 and 74.8% for ground bone and 76.2 and 82.8% for barley. The energy concentrations were 419 EFh for ground bone and 736 EFh for barley.
