Digestibility of nutrients, fermentation in the rumen and biochemical values of blood in sheep given natural or ammoniated twig feeds

Sbornik Nauchnykh Trudov Vsesoyuznogo Nauchno issledovatel' skogo Instituta Fiziologii, Biokhimii i Pitaniya Sel' skokhozyaistvennykh Zhivotnykh (30): 100-103

Romanov sheep, body weight 30.6 kg and prepared with rumen cannulae, were given daily during the 1st period 1.5 kg chopped hay and 0.3 kg mixed feeds; and in the 2nd period, the same ration but with 30% of the chopped hay replaced by comminuted willow twigs. In the 3rd period, willow twigs were treated with a 25% solution of ammonium hydroxide at 5% by weight for 3 h at 160 degrees C. Rumen liquid was taken for estimation of volatile fatty acids.
