Digestion and absorption and detoxification of ammonia in the rumen of cattle given urea and isobutylidene urea

In cattle, a diet containing isobutylidene diurea (IBDU) gave a slower rate of NH3 production in the rumen than that with urea, and, as such, prevented a rapid absorption of NH3 into the blood. When both compounds were given to cattle mixed with concentrates or silage there was hardly any difference between them (with respect to NH3 formation) as both entered the rumen slowly.
