A diet high in fibre caused an increase in the concentrations of ammonia and in the molar proportion of acetic acid in rumen content of cows. Addition, into the diet of cows, of feeds rich in readily fermentable carbohydrates decreased NH3 content and formation of acetic acid in the rumen. High-sugar diets favoured butyric acid fermentation, as high-starch aided that of propionic acid.
