Digestive enzymes in the alimentary canal and associated glands of foragers of Apis cerana indica

Digestive enzymes in the alimentary canal and associated glands of foragers of Apis cerana indica

Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Apiculture in Tropical Climates, New Delhi, February 29 March 4, 1980: 337-343

The enzyme activities of different regions of the digestive system, and of the thoracic, postcerebral and hypopharyngeal glands, were determined for A.cerana workers taken from a hive or collected whilst foraging. The pH of the tissues tested varied from 5.5-5.8 in the crop of fed workers (6.1-6.4 in unfed workers) to 6.7-6.8 in the midgut. Tests for 23 enzymes indicated the presence of 14 in the tissues and contents of the digestive system.
