Digestive physiology of honeybee Apis cerana indica

The pH and distribution of enzymes in different parts of the digestive system of the adult worker of A.cerana were studied. The pH of the foregut, midgut, hindgut, salivary glands and Malpighian tubules was 5.7, 6.5, 5.6, 5.8 and 5.3 respectively. The salivary glands and foregut contained amylase, maltase, invertase, lactase and lipase, while protease was present in traces. The midgut contained amylase, maltase, invertase, lactase, lipase, protease, and traces of esterase.
