Dimensional changes in boar spermatozoa during passage through the epididymis

Differential measurements of boar epididymal spermatozoa were performed in 8 slaughtered Landrace breed with a phase contrast microscope. The results in spermatozoal measurements were statistically analyzed with respect to the regions of epididymis (caput, corpus and cauda) and to the testis weight (group 1: < 350 g, group 2: 351-450 g and group 3: > 451 g). The sperm head showed a significant increase in length in the corpus epididymis. A significant increase was observed in the total sperm length, length and width of sperm head in the corpus and cauda epididymis, respectively (group 3). A significant decrease occurred in the length of the middle-piece (group 1 and 3) and tail (group 2 and 3) in the cauda epididymis. Group 3 boars deviated from group 1 by a significant decrease in total serum length in all segments of epididymis, and in tail length in the cauda epididymis. In group 3 boar sperm, head length in the caput, and corpus and head width in the cauda epididymis were significantly > those in the other 2 groups. Apparently, sperm maturation in the epididymis is related to the testicular growth.
