Dimensional stability and sorption characteristics of wood treated with alkylene oxide

The mechanisms by which epoxides react with wood to produce hydrophobic wood surfaces and dimensional stability are discussed. Specimens of Corsican pine sapwood (2x2x0.6 cm) were dried at 105 degrees C and then over P2O5 to const. wt. and treated with 95% propylene oxide and 5% triethylamine (as catalyst), either at 10 bar and 125 degrees C for 90 min, or at 8 bar and 125 degrees C for 30 min.
