Dimensional stabilization of wood by chlorosilanation

Microtome sections of Pinus nigra, 100 mu m thick, 1 cm wide and 10 cm long, were treated with dimethyl dichlorosilane in the gas or liquid phase. All samples were then leached in running deionized water for 24 h at ambient temp. Treatment in the vapour phase produced a 28-32% wt. gain, most of which was retained during leaching. Wafer specimens, 2x2 cm and 6 mm thick were treated in both vapour and liquid phases.
