Na+ transport along xylem vessels was studied in model experiments by perfusing NaCl solution of various concn. through excised sunflower stems. Na+ appeared in the perfused solution 2-5 h after the start at an av. concn. 35-50% of the initial value. Simultaneously the perfusing solution accumulated K+ and Ca2+ thus balancing its ion content. The ion flow rates via vessel walls were 1-5 x 10-9 and 0.1-4 x 10-7 M/cmsuperscript 2 h when water or 150 mM NaCl were perfused, resp.
