Diosgenin and sterine from Costus spiralis

Planta Medica (3): 185-187

The rhizomes contained four furostanole glycosides which after hydrolysis yielded diosgenin (0.43%), glucose and rhamnose. Free sterols and sterol esters and glycosides identified as cholesterol, campestanol, campesterol, stigmasterol, sitosterol and pollinasterol were also isolated.
