Diploid and polyploid gametes in crop plants: mechanisms of formation and utilization in plant breeding

Under the main headings introduction, mechanisms and utilization, the following topics are reviewed: (1) occurrence of 2n gametes, including a list of reported occurrences in crop species; (2) methods of induction; (3) the origin of 2n male gametes (premeiotic and meiotic disturbances and abnormal cytokinesis); (4) the origin of 2n female gametes; (5) the genetics of 2n gamete formation, including achievement of maximum heterozygosity by first division restitution and homozygosity by second division restitution; and (6) use of such gametes in breeding potato, lucerne and other crops, and their possible occurrence in association with anther culture.
